COLAS RAIL UK SHOWCASES SUSTAINABLE SPILL RESPONSE SOLUTION AHEAD OF ENVIRONMENT DAY

Ahead of its upcoming Environment Day, Colas Rail UK has taken a proactive step in promoting sustainability by hosting a live demonstration of A&S International Ltd’s innovative Oil Spill Eater II (OSE II), highlighting its potential to transform how the industry manages oil and fuel spillages.
Organised by the company’s Rail Services team, the demonstration brought together key stakeholders to see first-hand how OSE II works and why it is gaining recognition as a safer, greener alternative to traditional spill response methods. The initiative reflects Colas Rail UK’s continued commitment to reducing environmental impact across its operations and supply chain.
Oil Spill Eater II is a bioremediation solution that uses naturally occurring microorganisms to break down hydrocarbons into harmless substances such as carbon dioxide and water. This process not only removes visible contamination but also eliminates the environmental risks associated with residual pollutants in soil and water systems. Unlike conventional chemical treatments, OSE II is nontoxic, non-hazardous, and safe for use in sensitive environments.
To support the demonstration, Colas Rail UK has produced an informative video featuring insights from Edward Tainsh from Colas Rail UK and Shaun Macdonald from A&S International. In the video, both experts explain the science behind the product and outline how it can be deployed effectively in real-world rail and infrastructure settings. They also highlight the importance of adopting sustainable technologies that align with stricter environmental standards and industry expectations.
The video serves as both an educational resource and a practical showcase, illustrating how quickly OSE II can be applied and how it begins working immediately to degrade oil and fuel contaminants. This rapid response capability is particularly valuable in rail environments, where minimising disruption and environmental damage is critical.
Colas Rail UK’s decision to spotlight OSE II ahead of Environment Day underscores a broader industry shift toward environmentally responsible practices. With increasing regulatory pressure and growing awareness of ecological impact, solutions like OSE II offer a compelling combination of effectiveness, safety, and cost efficiency.
A spokesperson for the Rail Services team commented that initiatives like this are key to driving change: “We’re always looking for ways to improve how we operate sustainably. Demonstrating products like Oil Spill Eater II helps our teams and partners understand that there are viable, environmentally friendly alternatives available today.”
Beyond immediate spill response, OSE II can also be used for longer-term remediation of contaminated land and hazardous waste, making it a versatile addition to the environmental
management toolkit.
As Colas Rail UK prepares to mark Environment Day, the demonstration and accompanying video reinforce its commitment to innovation and sustainability—showing that practical, science-backed solutions are already making a difference on the ground.
