Rivers play an important role in any city, in terms of the economy, transportation of people and goods, and the wellbeing of local residents. In recent years, the maritime sector has become increasingly aware of its environmental and social impacts.

The Thames Green Scheme aims to demonstrate the environmental benefits of Thames operations; and to recognise the early adopters of new technologies and/or fuels that will reduce emissions to air. It can also be used a as tool to support the inland waterways operators community.
